Accomplishment. I'm just asking when do you feel accomplished? For some people it means one thing, for others it could mean another thing. We can feel accomplished in the tasks that we take action on, even if the action is small. I must admit that feelings of accomplishment from little actions is what prompted this post and caught my constantly running "John". I had to master something that I would usually have called in a professional or a male friend to do, typically that’s who has done this kinda stuff in the past while I turned a blind eye. But today, on Mother’s Day, almost 31 years after I become a mother, I fix my own toilet and turned one of my typical Facebook posts into a permanent article on this blog. I know to you it might sound silly but I was fearful for two months. I let that "John" run its mouth, make noise and pretend it didn’t exist. Having to stick my recently manicured hands into the tank opening almost every time was really pissing me off, no pun intended. I swear, that toilet had diarrhea of the mouth until I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired and shut that thing up. I’m curious how many things have you been ignoring because you thought it was going to be a whole lot more involved than it really was or you just didn't have the courage to overcome? Only temporarily relieving a situation before acting on a permanent fix can become a daily chore, it may give you some courage but it can attack confidence if the temporary fix doesn't truly resolve the problem. I had some stinkin' thinkin' about my abilities at first and it bred misdirection, even when I did ask others for help. One of my big brothers told me to get something that wasn't needed at all. One of my little brothers offered to call me and put it on after I went to the store to get it, but only if it was the right part. Another friend tried to break each part down to so I didn’t make a mistake. But in the end, the more I rolled up my sleeves and took the steps to re-position and relieve the tank ball, the more courage I built up to go all the way and completely stop the running "John" with the right flapper. Perhaps, you think you can't do it. Maybe you thought you were going to need help or tools that you didn’t have? Was your concern that you didn’t know how to ask for help or who? Are you like me, stop reading instructions after number four? Were you worried you were going to break a nail or someone might find out you needed help? What is this all about? Who started this crap that the job is for one person or that asking for help is some form of not being good enough. Or even better yet, believing that there’s something you really can’t accomplish that you never tried before. I know this big long conversation about a toilet flapper might just leave you with a few laughs, but the story is bigger than that. I was literally stuck listening to that crap everyday and getting caught up in my head, stuck thinking I wasn’t meant to be a plumber, I didn't know what I was doing. But, it literally took me more time to run to the store, 8 miles away, then it did for me to put that stinkin' rubber part on. OMG. What have you stopped yourself from doing? What do you want to do? Are you afraid of who you might become if you do it, success... oh that would suck huh? Can you think of something right now that you would really like to do and know that if you accomplished it you would feel successful? What does it look like? What does it feel like? Do you think you would walk different, do you think you would talk different? For those of you who don’t know me, I have this thing that I do when I’m on stage or among my friends: when I say something funny or I leave with a bang, I do this little jive-ass walk. Now envision your own swagger of dominance once you accomplish the thing that you thought you couldn't. Cuz, trust and believe that after I put that little stinkin' rubber gasket on, I swaggered out of my bathroom like I owned the world. I feel so accomplished, that I’m sitting here bringing bathroom talk about a flapper relieving my "john" to my blog but you know the message is so much bigger then that. We are the ones behind the wheel of our lives and we greatly impact our surroundings when we take action. If I’m being honest, I can’t be mad and hate on anyone that has lead me astray when I’m the one who didn't believe in myself at first but you better be damn sure that after a little accomplishment I am building up momentum and no "John" will clog-up my progress. Whats your toilet flapper story?
